Welcome to The Maquette’s

A new collection of original watercolour paintings

All summer I've been squeezing in painting during pockets of precious time. The busy lifestyle of early parenthood & entrepeneurship has resulted in a collection of watercolour paintings that are quite opposite. They are like an unplugged version of an acoustic performance. They are stripped down of all the noise, the busy pattern, loud colours, and instead bring a sense of quiet stillness and a bit of mystery.

Painting is my meditation. The studio is a place of contemplation and the creative process is where I work it all out: art and life. And the art is a reflection of life.

Why is it called The Maquette’s?

A maquette is a sculptor's small preliminary model or sketch.

If you know me, you know I love working on LARGE watercolour paintings. The problem is, these large scale paintings take a very long time to create, which is a big investment of time and supplies for a painting that could potentially be a flop! Watercolour's are unforgiving, and mistakes CAN'T be painted over like in acrylic and oil mediums. So that's why I've incorporated maquette's into my practice. They are true explorations, and my intention with this collection was to explore colour, techniques, and why I’m drawn to paint fabric.

Moments of Time

This series of watercolours evolved into paintings of subdued colour, soft texture, simplified shapes and meditative repetition. Each piece of fabric has it's own unique characteristics, yet is paired next to fabrics similar enough to be considered the same. They bring their own unique qualities and combine to create a beautifully captured moment of time. Like in life, we go through this journey as individuals and form something remarkably beautiful together.

Neat & Tidy

These delicate paintings have textiles that are folded, bundled and draped in a neat and tidy way, leaving room to breathe and escape to solace. The shapes repeat in a simplified pattern causing a predictability in each painting that lends a soothing familiarity. Yet some paintings have nuances of tension, formed from a dichotomy of illusion and reality, or from the title itself. These captivating subtleties beg for a closer look to see what is real and what is not, creating more mystery than at first glance.

The Realm Of Sculpture

With these small and intimate watercolour paintings of textiles, the details are nuanced and the illusions are subtle. They were created on paper and then carefully trimmed into a unique shape, which often contoured the fabric. Then a frame was designed around the unique shape and size of each watercolour and customized to both protect the valuable painting and act as a "shadow box". The shadow box heightens the illusion of realism within the painting and adds a literal depth, bringing each piece into the realm of sculpture.
